Yet, as much as I adored amateur sports, there are elements of it that I think could be improved:
Non-durability of the experience: One of the areas I’m most passionate about improving is the durability of the experiences related to amateur sports. It is a simple fact that participation in amateur sports occurs during a finite period of life—and that period begins and ends seemingly in the blink of an eye. Coaches always tell you “play every down like it’s your last, because you never know when it might be.” While athletic participation may always be such a finite experience, that doesn’t mean that all participation with the greater team community needs to end simply because the athletic compeition component does.
Team athletic competition, particularly at the amateur level, is one of the most exciting and rewarding activities I know of. Not only does athletic competition teach young people the value of teamwork and the power of working together to achieve a common goal, it also helps kids build individual character. I learned some of my most important life lessons through athletic competition, and I have drawn upon those experiences in countless ways since my playing days came to an end.
